Environmental Remediation & Community Revitalization
The Edward Shands site in Oakland, California, formerly served as an adult education and community-focused facility supporting workforce development and continuing education. While the site itself functioned as an educational resource, it is located within an area shaped by
surrounding legacy industrial and commercial land uses that predate modern environmental regulations.
These historical conditions have contributed to potential soil contamination and environmental concerns affecting nearby residential communities, with disproportionate impacts on historically underserved neighborhoods.
Current revitalization and environmental justice efforts, supported by community-based organizations such as Brother-to-Brother, emphasize public education, stakeholder and community engagement, and alignment with DTSC-guided assessment and remediation processes. These activities support brownfield remediation planning and community-informed redevelopment strategies that protect public health, reduce potential exposure risks, and
advance safe, beneficial reuse in a manner consistent with equitable redevelopment principles. Conversations and educational sessions emphasized:
Environmental assessment and cleanup planning
Brownfield remediation strategies
Restoring land for safe community and economic use
Aligning cleanup efforts with community health outcomes
These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to transforming neglected sites into safe, productive assets for future generations while ensuring residents have a voice in redevelopment processes.

Food, Fellowship & Support for Disadvantaged Communities (2024–2025)
2024 Community Food & Fellowship Initiatives
In 2024, Brother-to-Brother continued its tradition of providing nutritious meals and fellowship to individuals and families facing economic hardship. Food service remained a key component of
retreats, weekly gatherings, and special events—reinforcing dignity, inclusion, and communal care. A notable example was the 2024 Rena Lofton Annual Holiday Appreciation Brunch, which brought families, elders, and supporters together in Oakland to share a meal and express gratitude for collective support throughout the year.
2025 Expansion of Food-Centered Community Support
In 2025, Brother-to-Brother expanded food-centered outreach to further address food insecurity among seniors, families, and vulnerable populations. Events such as the 2025 Rena Lofton
Annual Holiday Appreciation Brunch strengthened community bonds through shared meals, reflection, and giving. Across both years, food service remained a cornerstone of Brother-to-Brother’s
mission—meeting immediate needs while fostering connection, dignity, and trust.
